Finding God on the Dancefloor

The Rhythm of Hope:

From the Pew to the Playlist

Take a look at the left side of the image above. What is your memory or idea of church? For many of us, it’s a towering, cold stone building surrounded by weathered graves and a heavy, hallowed silence. Is that the image you have in your head? Does that match your idea of what church “has” to be?

I grew up thinking it was a place of hushed whispers and stiff pews where you had to hold your breath. If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t “fit” in that picture, do I have a surprise for you.

When I stepped into Connect City Church in Wakefield, everything I thought I knew about “church” was turned upside down.

There were no cold stones or haunting silences here. Instead, the atmosphere felt alive—modern, welcoming, and electric.

Before I even reached my seat, the bass hit me. It wasn’t a somber organ; it was the powerful, driving beat of,

Maverick City Music’s

“I Thank God

Hell Lost Another One.”

The energy was contagious. People weren’t just sitting in rows; they were celebrating—jumping off the floor, literally bouncing, singing, and dancing.

I stood in amazement thinking, “What’s going on here? This isn’t what I remember as a church!”

It was the first time I realized that faith doesn’t have to be a dark or distant ritual—it can be loud, joyful, and full of life. This sparked a journey of realization: God’s message isn’t just in old hymns; it can be found in the very tracks we’ve been dancing to for years.

God Speaking Through the Beat

As I started my journey after reading the Bible and growing in my faith, I began to notice something: I started hearing God in places I had never looked before. I realized that some of the biggest dance tracks in the world carry a message of hope that is deeply rooted in faith, even if we didn’t realize it at the time.

Track 1: “Don’t You Worry Child” – Swedish House Mafia

The Message: Heaven Has a Plan

Before I was “Fully All In,” as I call it, I was just dipping my toes in. I remember driving my van to pick up my wife, Adele, from work. I was talking to God, asking Him to help me understand—to give me a sign.

Suddenly, I felt the urge to turn the radio up to full volume. I already loved this track, but this time the lyrics hit differently:

“Don’t you worry, don’t you worry, child See, heaven’s got a plan for you.”

It felt like a direct whisper from God during a time of struggle. To me, it’s a modern echo of Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” It’s a reminder that even when life feels chaotic, there is a Father looking out for us.

Track 2: “You’ve Got the Love” – Candi Staton

The Message: An Unfailing Foundation

This is an absolute anthem and a staple of UK dance culture, but its heart is pure Gospel. Candi Staton actually started as a Gospel singer, and this song is about the unwavering, “never-giving-up” love of God that carries us when our own strength fails.

”Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air / I know I can count on you.”

When you are trying to cope with life’s pressures, this song serves as a prayer of surrender. It aligns perfectly with Romans 8:39, which promises that nothing—no height, no depth—will be able to separate us from the love of God.

Why Music Matters for Coping

At COPE Ministry, we believe God meets you exactly where you are—whether that’s in a church in Wakefield or through your headphones on a difficult day. These songs prove that you are already closer to a message of hope than you might realize.

Faith isn’t about fitting into a box; it’s about finding the rhythm of grace in your everyday life.
